JOB SUMMARY
Options for Care are recruiting a Senior Occupational Therapist to work at Montague Court, one of our mental health inpatient services in Birmingham. We have two further hospitals and a recovery home:
Montague Court: 18-bed male long term complex care mental health inpatient unit, Edgbaston
Dartmouth House: 16-bed male long term complex care mental health inpatient unit, Handsworth Wood
Stanford Court: 19-bed male mental health high dependency inpatient unit based in Highgate.
We are looking for a dynamic OT with a passion for working with people who have severe and enduring mental health diagnoses. The MOHOST is established as the core occupational therapy assessment tool, providing evidence of change and focus on occupation. Additional assessments are completed as led by service-user need.
The successful candidate will be based at Montague Court and will be supported by the Head of Therapies.
Essential Criteria:
BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy, MSc Occupational Therapy or a Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
Registration with HCPC.
Post registration experience working in inpatient rehabilitation and recovery settings
-To co-ordinate and lead on provision of the therapeutic programme, including running both group and individual sessions.
-To work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team, under the supervision of the Head of Therapies, ensuring the occupational needs of the service-users are considered and addressed.
– To assist in running the Occupational Therapy team, providing management supervision to OTAs.

Principle Responsibilities
Professional Practice:
To autonomously complete the occupational therapy process of assessment, intervention and evaluation for service users requiring mental health rehabilitation.
To hold a caseload and maintain evidence based occupation at the centre of practice through using effective clinical decision-making and clinical skills in order to assess, treat and evaluate care that meets the service users needs in a timely manner.
Complete full and holistic assessments of service users occupational performance including areas of self-care, productivity and leisure.
Facilitate a range of group and individual sessions to meet the needs of service-users within the unit and in the community. These interventions may also be delivered across the organisation.
Implement practices that promote participation, inclusivity and the rights of our service users who access occupational therapy services, their families and their carers, in line with their choices.
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to exercise professional judgement to manage risk, including positive risk-taking.
Complete all necessary clinical documentation in accordance with relevant organisational policy and professional standards, thus contributing to effective communication i.e. clinical notes, care plans, care plan evaluations, MDT summaries, CPA reports, governance reports.
Facilitation of Learning:
Be responsible for continuing professional development, ensuring service delivery reflects current best practice.
Record relevant continuing professional development that identifies the impact and benefit of your learning for yourself and those accessing your services.
Actively participate in regular supervision to consolidate your knowledge, skills, attitudes, and to support in identifying yours and others’ learning needs.
Engage in the appraisal process, to include training needs, and to review this annually with the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist.
Develop and evaluate educational resources for students, junior colleagues and individuals in our care.
Clinically supervise, mentor and educate others, such as occupational therapists and assistants, with the support of the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist.
Contribute to professional networks to promote the exchange of knowledge, skills and resources.
To support the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist in completing appraisals of junior staff.
Facilitate the creation of a culture in which everyone is encouraged to reflect and learn (including from mistakes), to receive and give constructive feedback, and to learn from and with each other.
Support individuals to learn and apply into practice new techniques that will enhance rehabilitation practices for service users in our care.
Leadership:
Contribute towards leadership and support others to promote the profession founded on person-centred, compassionate and values-based leadership principles.
Autonomously manage own workload, identify priorities, and manage time and resources effectively, within changing and complex environments.
Delegate appropriate tasks to Occupational Therapy support staff in the team.
Contribute to the effective management of a budget.
Take responsibility for the work of others within a defined scope of practice, with more experienced colleagues as required. This may be inclusive of Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants and Activity Workers.
Contribute to the recruitment and induction of staff, students and/or volunteers.
Review and develop services as part of a team through supporting the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist to formulate and influence the achievement of service development plans within the occupational therapy department, and respond in a timely manner to regulatory requirements that meet service user needs.
To assist in running the occupational therapy team under the supervision of the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist, and to deputise when required.
Use a range of communication styles and where necessary adapt professional language to influence, advocate and promote Occupational Therapy to different audiences within and beyond the profession.
Evidence, Research and Development:
Participate in development and improvement of the occupational therapy service, remaining informed of current research to ensure practice is evidence-based, providing effective guidance and supervision for junior staff.
Critically appraise, translate and apply published evidence to inform practice.
Proactively contribute and lead aspects of evaluation on the effect and outcomes of change through being involved in regular audit review of occupational therapy provision across Options for Care, led by the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist.
To maintain and develop links with others working within the specialism of mental health rehabilitation in order to support and develop best practice at Options for Care.
Facilitate the involvement of people who access occupational therapy services, their families and their carers, as well as staff and/or students, to co-design and co-produce aspects of quality improvement.
Contribute towards the development of guidelines and polices within the occupational therapy department with more experienced colleagues.
Additional responsibilities:
Adhere to national, organisational and Occupational Therapy policies/guidelines.
Attend statutory and mandatory training as necessary as specified by Options for Care.
Be personally responsible for security of keys/alarms.
Act as a role model to all staff, and in a manner which positively reflects the values of the organisation ensuring effective communication pathways exist with internal and external stakeholders aimed at developing current models of care.
Ensure care delivery meets and addresses the issues of spirituality, equality, diversity and rights in accordance with good practice and legislation in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.
Keep records of statistical information regarding service-user contacts and ensure this is provided to the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist.
Contribute to the care of equipment and maintenance of stock.
Offer regular practice placements for Occupational Therapy students.
Attend meetings as necessary.
Carry out other duties identified by the senior team commensurate with their role as and when required.
Work across all units if required.
